Urban Micro-Forests: Greening Delhi's Concrete Jungle
Urban Micro-Forests: Greening Delhi's Concrete Jungle
Problem Statement
Delhi faces severe environmental challenges, including hazardous air pollution levels exceeding WHO guidelines by 7-10 times, rising urban temperatures (2°C higher than surrounding areas), and declining biodiversity. These issues directly impact public health, with respiratory diseases affecting 30% of children and heat-related illnesses increasing by 15% annually.
Proposed Solution
We propose creating 50 high-density micro-forests (Miyawaki method) of 100-500 square meters each across Delhi. Each micro-forest will contain native species planted at 3-4 times normal density, creating mature forest ecosystems within 20-30 years instead of 200+ years. Community involvement in planting and maintenance will ensure sustainability.
Expected Impact
This initiative aims to reduce local air pollution by 25%, decrease ambient temperature by 2-3°C in surrounding areas, increase biodiversity by 30%, and improve community wellbeing through green space access. Each micro-forest can absorb approximately 30 tons of CO2 annually when mature.
Resources Required
The project requires ₹3.5 crore for implementation, including land preparation, saplings, irrigation systems, community training, and 3-year maintenance. We seek partnerships with municipal corporations, environmental NGOs, corporate CSR initiatives, and resident welfare associations.
